Hassan Whiteside Named Marshall Student Athlete of the Week|
Dec. 1, 2009
Hassan Whiteside was selected Conference USA Rookie of the Week Nov. 30. Whiteside just missed a triple-double as he tallied 14 points, 17 rebounds and nine blocks in a 60-53 win over Ohio on Saturday night. The nine blocks tied the school record for most in a game, as well as set the Conference USA record for most blocks by a freshman. It also tied as the sixth-best performance overall in conference history. His performance against Ohio followed a 14-point, 12-rebound effort in Marshall's 87-74 victory over Lamar Nov. 25.
Whiteside averaged a double-double (14.0 ppg, 14.5 rpg) in the final two games of the Global Sports Invitational to lead the Thundering Herd to the title with a perfect 4-0 mark. The freshman currently leads C-USA in both rebounding (9.4) and blocks (4.6). This is his first Rookie of the Week honor. He is the second Herd player (Damier Pitts, 12/8/08) to earn C-USA Rookie of the Week honors since MU joined the league in 2005.
