Toby Harkins has served as Marshall University's Associate Head Athletic Trainer - Football since July of 2010. He also serves as an approved clinical instructor in the MU Athletic Training Education Program.
Harkins grew up in Simpsonville, S.C. and completed his education at Erskine College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management. He also attended Furman University obtaining a Master of Arts in Health and Exercise Science. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association.
Prior to working at MU, Harkins was the Head Athletic Trainer & Assistant Director of Athletics at Charleston Southern University from 2005 - 2010. During his tenure at CSU, his staff was awarded with the CSU Outstanding Team Award and SCATA College & University Athletic Training Staff of the Year. Previous to CSU, he held the same position at Erskine College from 1998-2005. During his tenure at Erskine he was also an Assistant Professor in the Athletic Training Education Program teaching such courses as Therapeutic Modalities, Kinesiology, Nutrition, Medical Aspects, Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries, and Introduction to Athletic Training. While at Erskine, Harkins also served as the Chair of the Carolinas Virginia Athletic Conference Athletic Training Committee.
Harkins has published four case studies, spoken at multiple professional symposiums, and presently holds certifications as an Athletic Trainer, and American Heart Association Professional Rescuer. He has also served as the chair for the South Carolina Athletic Trainers' Association (SCATA) Scholarship Committee and Secretary/ Treasurer of the Association.
Toby is married to Kelly Ramsdell Harkins, who is also a Certified Athletic Trainer and serves as an instructor in MU's Athletic Training Education program. They have a three year old son, Sully, and a newborn daughter, Paisley. They reside in Huntington, WV.
