Big Green Donor of the Week - Dr. Jim Butler
Nov. 7, 2012
Have you ever walked through the halls of Dr. Nika A. Hettlinger & Dr. Jim R. Butler Family Dentistry? Well if you have, it is easy to see why Dr. Butler is this week's Big Green Donor of the Week. From the floor to the walls everywhere you look is nothing but Marshall Memorabilia.
When asked what was his favorite item was, Dr. Butler said, "Wow, I have to choose? I would say the authentic 1950s jersey signed by all the former basketball players that have their number retired, and the framed picture of the crowd on the field after the Xavier game."
Dr. James Butler attended Marshall University, receiving his bachelor's degree in biological sciences. Upon completion of his degree, he attended West Virginia University School of Dentistry and graduated as Doctor of Dental Surgery. While at Marshall, he married Lynn Morris. The Butlers returned to Huntington because of their love for the area and purchased a dental practice on Third Avenue.
Dr. Butler's wife, Lynn, is the owner of Setzer's World of Camping, also located in Huntington. They have been blessed with three children, Eric, a former Yeager Scholar at Marshall University and current Ph.D. candidate at Villanova; Amy, Marshall graduate and finance manager at Setzer's; and Julie, a registered nurse at St. Mary's Medical Center.
Dr. Butler has a passion for MU athletics and it shows through his support to the athletic department. He has been a season ticket holder in basketball and football since 1979. He has also been a long time member of the Big Green and was recently selected to serve on the Big Green board of directors. Through all the years, Dr. Butler and his family have been more than willing to help each and every athletic team, and have recently mad a gift to the Vision Campaign to insure student-athletes at MU have the best facilities.
Favorite Marshall Moment:
The 1971 Xavier game! It was one of those monumental wins that I am proud to say I was there to witness.
Favorite Marshall Player:
Chad Pennington, Mike D'Antoni, and Mike Hamrick. These three former athletes are working so hard to insure that our university isn't left behind. This Vision Campaign must succeed and with their leadership and the support of our fan base it will.
Why give to the Big Green:
Lynn and I have always given back to Marshall University and have been longtime supporters of the Big Green. I feel like I owe Marshall, I received a wonderful education from MU and I want the current athletes to have the same possibilities.
