Marshall Cheerleading Tryout Information Our Cheerleading program is composed of both co-ed couples and all-girl groups that earn the opportunity to cheer various athletic events over the course of two full semesters. Events include: All home football games Home men’s basketball games Home women’s basketball games Home volleyball games Big green fund raising events Cheerleading clinics

Travel to away football games and post-season basketball tournaments will be determined by the coaching staff. In April, 16 females and 4 males compete in the D1A Small Coed division at NCA nationals in Daytona, Florida. Participation in this competition is not guaranteed and is contingent on a set of certain criteria met over the course of the year.

In addition, there are many non-sporting appearances, 2-3 practices per week, and two morning workouts per week.

Selection Criteria Candidates are selected based on a variety of factors. Current skill level is just one of the criteria to make the team; the potential for squad partnering, physical fitness, work ethic, dedication, and attitude, along with grades, and your ability to engage fans, Alumni, and the overall Marshall community are important elements. For specific "requirements," listed below is the beginning of the standards we are looking for to represent MU Cheer. There are a lot of all-squad stunts, therefore coed stunting ability with multiple partners and coachability in unifying technique is very important. Also note that all returning squad members must try out every year.

Ladies: Generally, the ideal candidate will be in excellent shape, present themselves well on the court, cheer with energy and enthusiasm, be easy to stunt with or show good potential, have a solid standing tuck, and running tumbling pass ending in no less than a tuck on non-spring mats.

Guys: Generally, ideally male candidates will have at least a toss stunt and can tumble (standing tuck and running tumbling). Male candidates that are stronger in one area and weaker in the other are still strongly considered for the team. Male candidates who have little to no cheer experience, but show potential by being strong and athletic are also considered for the team.

What to Wear: Proper fitting school neutral athletic wear; Marshall colors (green, black, white); and cheer shoes or sneakers. Ladies should wear a bow or ribbon in their hair, gameday appropriate makeup and hair styled in a collegiate manner (in ponytail or half-up and out of face). Guys should be clean cut and have trimmed or shaved facial hair. Jewelry is not permitted and can result in a score deduction and should be removed prior to beginning the tryout. TRYOUT FORMAT

Individual skills Participants will demonstrate individual skills such as jumps, standing tumbling, and running tumbling on non-spring mats.

• Jumps- The minimum requirement is 3 connected jumps of their choice at level flexibility and proper jump technique. A standing tuck at the end may increase score, but is not required • Standing tumbling- The minimum requirement is a standing back tuck on the hardwood, and standing back handspring back tuck on non-spring mats. Layouts and fulls are recommended. • Running tumbling- The minimum requirement is a roundoff, back handspring, tuck on non-spring mats. Layouts and fulls are recommended. • Stunts- Participants will receive a stunt score than takes into account stunt difficulty and stunt technique while performing gameday and group/single base advanced/elite stunts. • Gameday Cheers and Fight Songs- Participants will be scored based on Motion technique and sharpness, Motion Memory, and gameday appeal. First time participants must perform “Sons of Marshall” and “Fight On.” Returning participants must perform 3 of 5 random dances including, “Sons of Marshall,” “Fight On,” “Buffalo Medley,” “Rise Above It,” “Eat em up.”

Interview Participants will participate in an interview during the tryout process. Participants should wear interview appropriate clothing and be prepared to answer general questions about Marshall University as well as specific questions regarding the participant.

IMPORTANT DATES • Tryout Prep Clinic: May 6, 2017 from 10am-1pm (Gullickson Hall Main Gym) • Tryout Dates: May 12-13, 9am-12pm and 1pm to 9pm (both days) (Henderson Center Main Gym) • Alternative Tryout Date: Saturday May 6, 2017 2:00pm to 9:00 pm (for participants with a conflict on May 12-13). Individuals must provide proof they have a conflict with official tryout dates. The team will not be released until after the tryout on May 12-13. • College Prep Clinic: May 6, 2017, 10:00am to 1:00pm
