EVANSVILLE, Ind.- Senior Matt Schiffbauer turned in an impressive performance for the Thundering Herd cross country team on Saturday afternoon, finishing first in a field of 122 runners at the Evansville Invitational. Schiffbauer placed first with an individual time of 25:08.96, which was a near four seconds faster than Southern Illinois' Neal Anderson, who finished second in the 8k with a time of 25:12.18.
As a whole, though, Southern Illinois saw five runners break the top ten, earning the squad the team win and first place prize with 26 points. Iupui was second with 63 points, while Marshall - whose best finishers behind Schiffbauer were David Caldwell in 14th, and Chris Cole and Caleb Bowen in 33rd and 34th respectively - placed third in the team standings with a score of 101. The University of Evansville was fourth with 103 points.
In the ladies' 5k race, Marshall was led by the 44th place finish of junior Kelley Mortakis, whose time of 19:56.67 was followed most closely by Samantha Stroker's 51st place time of 20:17.12. The only other member of the women's team to break into the top-60 was Lauren Bartoldson, who finished 56th in the field of 106.
Belmont finished in first on the women's side with 32 points, Marshall was 10th with 260, and Marian finished in last place - 11th - with 290 points.
The Herd will now take a two-and-a-half week hiatus before returning to action at the Conference USA Championships in Houston, Texas, on October 31st.
