HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men’s and women’s cross country coach Jeff Small announced the Herd’s 2014 schedule Tuesday.
After a 2013 fall season that saw the Thundering Herd struggle and succeed, the upcoming season’s schedule is a drastic adjustment compared to a minor one that was seen between 2012 and 2013. After having made consecutive appearances in four events last season, the Herd will make just one return to an event in 2014 from the previous season.
The best Marshall performance of last season came Oct. 19 at the Evansville Invitational, where the men’s team finished first overall.
The 2014 season will begin on Friday, Sept. 5 in Athens, Ohio, at the Ohio Invitational, followed by a two-week break before heading to Asheville, N.C., on Sept. 20 to compete in the Asheville Cross Country Carnival.
Next comes the only repeated regular season meet from 2013, the Charlotte Invitational on Sept. 27, which will be hosted by fellow Conference USA member Charlotte.
Capping off the regular season will be a run at the Richmond-hosted Cross Country Only National Invitational in Mechanicsville, Va., on Oct. 17.
The C-USA Championship will take place in Denton, Texas, for the second straight season with host North Texas welcoming the new 14-member conference to town, Nov. 1.
The Herd will then look to the postseason in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Nov. 14 at State College, Pa., and hope to qualify for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Times are still to be determined for most 2014 meets.
