HUNTINGTON, W.Va.--The Marshall cross country team will open its 2017 season Friday night when the team travels to Morehead, Kentucky for the Morehead State Eagle Opener.

The meet gets underway at 6:45 p.m. ET with the women's 5K, followed by the men's 5K.

Marshall will compete against three other schools; Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky, and Morehead State.

This is the second consecutive season in which the Herd will open its season at the Morehead State Eagle Opener. A season ago, the women finished second as a team led by current junior Adriana Cook who finished second individually with a time of 18:48.9. Senior Barkley Castro (20:20.0) and sophomore Mary Kerby (20:34.2) also finished in top-20 in that meet and led among returning runners.

On the men's side, the team finished third last season. Current junior Daniel Green led the way with a ninth place finish and time of 16:04.2. Sophomore Alex Minor finished 10th with a time of 16:04.4 and junior Nick Schmidt finished 15th with a time of 16:18.4.

"I'm excited for this cross country season," assistant coach Caleb Bowen said. "We have a solid top-three on the guy's side and I'm looking for some of the young guys to step up and close the gap from our number three to number five. If we can do that, we will beat our preseason ranking and do really well at conference and regionals."

"On the ladies side, we have Adriana Cook who will lead the team," Bowen said. "She was All-Conference USA last year and I believe she will move up and place even higher. I am excited to see which ladies step up and take the number two to five spots. It's going to be fun watching them come together and race with each other. I believe we can beat our preseason rankings on the women's side as well but we need a good number four and five to bring it home for us."
