EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The Marshall University cross country team will travel west for the Evansville Invitational at the University of Evansville Cross Country Course this Saturday at 11 a.m.
The meet will be the Thundering Herd’s fourth in a season that has seen the squad positively progress through each race it has run. As the final meet before the Conference USA Championships on Oct. 29, the Evansville Invitational will give the Marshall men and women one last chance to improve upon the times they’ve set in previous races.
The women’s 5k race will start things off at 11 a.m. and will be followed shortly thereafter by the men’s 8k race. Last season, Marshall senior Matt Schiffbauer finished first-place individually in the meet, while David Caldwell crossed the line in 14th to propel the Herd men to a third-place finish out of 12 teams. With Schiffbauer now graduated, Caldwell will look to lead the squad to another impressive placement at this year’s event.
The women, led by Sammantha Stroker and Lauren Bartoldson, finished 10th out of 11 teams in last fall’s competition but were without top-runners Leslie Thomas and Kelley Mortakis at the event. Their return, coupled with the emergence of this season’s leading runner, Celia Leonard, should give the women’s team a much needed boost at the competition.
Results from the meet will be available on Herdzone.com shortly after the conclusion of the race.
