Herd Cross Country Prepares for VertCross Invitational|
Oct. 13, 2016
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall’s Cross Country teams travel to Kernersville, N.C. on Friday for the VertCross Invitational hosted by High Point University. This is the team’s fourth and final meet before the 2016 Conference USA Championships.
Two weeks removed from a large meet at Notre Dame, and two weeks before the C-USA Championships in Charlotte, the teams look towards a crucial meet in North Carolina.
The meet begins at 4:30 ET for the men’s race, followed by the women’s race at 5:15 ET. The men will run an 8K race for a third consecutive meet. The women will be running in a 6K race for the first time this season.
The meet will feature nearly 30 schools. ACC opposition Duke and North Carolina State, and yearly contenders in their respective conferences Appalachian State, Richmond, and UNC Ashville are among the teams Marshall will compete against. Many similar sized schools will compete alongside The Herd on Friday.
“We’re all really excited for this meet. It was originally a smaller meet that has grown to almost 30 teams. A lot of the schools are similar to us. Everyone on our team has had a good two weeks of training, and I believe everyone will come in prepared. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of jumps in times for our runners.”
Bowen on what the coaches are looking for:
“We really want to see our 3, 4, and 5 runners be closer to our 1-2 runners. I think we’ll do really well if that happens.”
Bowen on which runners to look out for:
“Look out for seniors Will Shaffer and Amber Govey. Both of them especially have had good workouts recently and we’re looking for big improvements from them.”
