Cross Country Teams Have Respectable Showing at Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. Ė Marshall women finished 27th of 34 teams while the men took 30th of 36 teams Saturday at the 2001 NCAA Pre-Meet/Furman Invitational.

Jennifer Merschoff (Ronkonoma, N.Y.) led the women with a time of 23:03, placing her 99th of 229 runners. Casey Batey (Milton, W.Va.), marking a time of 25:01, finished 27th out of 242 men.

Other scorers for the women included Jessica Taylor (Fayetteville, W.Va.), 138th, Sarah Corely (Fairmont, W.Va.), 144th, Shelby Pride (Bethel, Ohio), 158th, and Stephanie Eastman (Spencer, W.Va), 182nd.

Craig Swisher (Bidwell, Ohio), 113, Jacob Porter (Barboursville, W.Va.), 196, Rob Smith (Huntington, W.Va.), 210, and Jason Pyles (Galipolis Ferry, W.Va.), 212, contributed to the menís overall finish.

Molly Austin of Colorado won the womenís meet with a time of 20:48, while Boaz Cheboiywo of Eastern Michigan took the first place title for the men with 23:31.

Colorado won the team competition for the women with 62 points and Georgetown took the menís title with 48 points.

Marshall runs again in the MAC Championship, Oct. 27, in Ypsilanto, Mich.
