Oct. 30, 2011
HOUSTON, Texas- The Thundering Herd men’s and women’s cross country teams are all-set to travel to Houston, Texas, for the 2011 Conference USA Championships hosted by Rice University at the Wildcat Golf Club on October 31.
Senior runner Matt Schiffbauer will enter the race coming off an impressive, first place finish at the Evansville Invitational Tournament, where the Marshall men finished a solid third place overall two weeks ago. The squad – composed of six seniors – has steadily improved over the last several weeks, and will be hoping to make a good run at the championship.
For the women, junior Leslie Thomas will return after sitting out the Evansville meet, and will look to resume a pace that has seen her finish in the top-30 during this season’s other meets. Junior Kelley Mortakis will also hope to show well at the race, and will be expecting to break into the top-50 for the third time running this season.
Last season, Schiffbauer placed third at the tournament, while his team finished fourth overall. This year, the men’s squad will be hoping to set a new precedent for the program by breaking into the top three for the first time in these six seniors’ tenure. The ladies finished dead-last in twelfth place during the 2010 meet, and will certainly hope to reverse their fortunes this time around. The Tulsa Golden Hurricane was the champion in both the men’s and women’s races last season.
The men’s 8k race is set to start at 9:00 a.m., while the women’s 6k meet will begin one hour later at 10:00 a.m. The awards ceremony will conclude the event, and is set to take place at 11:00 a.m. Admission to the event is free, and for more information on the tournament, be sure to check out C-USA’s official website by clicking here.
