Marshall Heads to Conference USA Championships

The Marshall women will look to top last year's fifth place finish

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall cross country looks to end the 2013 season on a high note with the Conference USA Championships, in Denton, Texas, on Saturday morning.

In the final meet of the regular season, the Marshall men's team finished first at the Evansville Invitational (Oct. 19), while the women finished fourth at UE Cross Country Course.

Hosted by new Conference USA member North Texas at Eagle Point Cross Country Course, the C-USA Championships will start at 9 a.m. with the men's 8,000-meter race, with the women’s 5,000-meter race to follow at 10 a.m.

Marshall’s men placed eighth in the conference championship last season, while the women placed fifth.

Senior Jack Whitney (Ripley, W.Va.) has been the highest Marshall men’s finisher in all four races. Whitney is coming off of a fourth place finish in the Evansville Invitational with a time of 24:54.09. Junior Caleb Bowen (Hurricane, W.Va.) also is coming off a ninth-place finish in Evansville, with a time of 26:13.60.

On the women’s side, freshman Andrea Porter (Pt. Pleasant, W.Va.) is coming off a strong finish of 22nd at the most recent Evansville Invitational, with a time of 19:52.54. Also performing well for the Herd was junior Lauren Bartoldson (Martinsburg, W.Va.). She finished 29th with a time of 20:00.64.



In the men’s meet, Marshall will take on host North Texas, Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, Rice, Tulane, Tulsa and UTEP. The Herd women will run against Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Middle Tennessee, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UTEP and UTSA.
