IRVING, Texas – Junior Henry Heisey of the Marshall University men’s cross country team has been named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team, as announced by league officials Wednesday afternoon.
Heisey, a chemistry major, is on an academic scholarship granted to him through the Yeager Scholarship Foundation. He holds a 3.93 GPA.
Due to the demanding course work a Yeager Scholar has to endure through the first two years including four rigorous seminars, Heisey spent his sophomore year focused on academics while sitting out of the competitive cross country season.
“The main reason I didn’t run was because those seminars were so demanding,” Heisey said. “I wanted to be able to focus on my work.”
However, the Columbus, Ohio, native experienced a once-and-a-lifetime opportunity this past summer, spending three weeks studying at the University of Oxford, as offered through the Yeager program.
“It was neat to be able to train and study in a place like Oxford,” Heisey said. “Being able to use the unparalleled resources they have at the University of Oxford was amazing.”
Heisey had a successful junior year on the trails for Marshall as he participated in all races this season. He placed 54th at the C-USA Championships.
“It is great to see him balance both his academics and athletics while doing well in both,” head coach Jeff Small said.
The junior is planning another overseas trip this summer as he will venture to Spain to work on his foreign language efficiency.
