Marshall head coach Dave Piepenbrink enters his second full season as the Thundering Herd skipper. Piepenbrink has run the program since April 3, 1998 when he was named interim head coach. He was given his promotion following three years as the Herd's top assistant.
Piepenbrink went 9-21 as head coach in 1998, including a 9-5 victory over Virginia Tech in his first game. Under Piepenbrink's tutelage that season, first baseman Tom Kuempel was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year after winning the conference's triple crown. It was the Herd's first triple crown winner or conference MVP in the program's history.
Under Piepenbrink, a young Thundering Herd squad posted a 12-43-1 record in 1999. Out of the 11 position players that appeared in at least half of the Herd's games, seven were underclassmen. The pitching staff was equally as green. Five of the nine pitchers with 10 or more appearances were either freshmen or sophomores.
Piepenbrink joined the Marshall coaching staff after a standout playing career under Jack Cook and Howard McCann with the Herd from 1987-1990. During his career, he set school records in doubles (41), runs scored (150) and at-bats (480). Piepenbrink was a first-team All-Southern Conference performer in 1990, and was named to the all-tournament team that same season after guiding Marshall to a semifinal berth.
"I am extremely excited to have an opportunity to coach here," said Piepenbrink. "I can't think of any job in the country that I would rather have than this one. I can't think of another job that would take me away from Marshall."
It is is this enthusiasm that has won over both Herd baseball fans and the Marshall administration.
"We are entering a very important era for Marshall baseball, and we feel fortunate to have Dave Piepenbrink leading the way," said Director of Athletics Lance West. "I am confident that David will bring excitement to the baseball program, and serve as a great role model for our student-athletes."
Piepenbrink is married to the fomrer Kelly Crawford of Smoot, WV. The couple has two children, Rachel Leigh and Grace Catherine.
