March 7, 2007
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State jumped out to an early lead, then rode the strong pitching of Henry Mabee in defeating the Marshall baseball team, 7-2, Wednesday afternoon at Allen Field. The loss snapped Marshall's four-game winning streak.
Mabee (1-2) tossed 6 1/3 innings while allowing six hits and one earned run. He struck out six. Alan Gentry (Jr., Hot Springs, Ark.) started for Marshall and went three innings, giving up two earned runs, two hits and two walks while recording a strikeout. He fell to 0-1 this season. Marshall got a lot of pitchers some work, using six pitchers in all.
Jeff Rowley (Jr., Buffalo, N.Y.) ripped his first home run for the Thundering Herd in the eighth inning, a solo shot to right-center field. Marshall's other run came on a Josh Valle (Fr., Brentwood, N.Y.) sacrifice fly to score Brandon Casamassima (So., Colleywood, Texas) in the seventh. The Herd had plenty of opportunities early with hits in each of the first four innings, but they failed to capitalize while stranding five baserunners.
Trent Hanna went 3-for-5 for Morehead State to lead a nine-hit attack. He and Dustin Miles each added two runs batted in.
Morehead State jumped out to a 6-0 lead by scoring two runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings. They added a run in the eighth on a Hanna double to cap the scoring.
Marshall returns home Friday to University Heights Field against Campbell. First pitch is at 1 p.m., and admission is free.
