LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Marshall baseball team gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth inning and suffered a 7-6 defeat at Kentucky Wednesday at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Ky.
Adam Ptacek (Sr., Assaria, Kan.) had two RBI for the Herd, while Rich Russell (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) reached base three times, including twice when hit by pitches, pushing his league-leading total to 11 this season. He also extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Marshall (4-6) took the lead with a three-run third inning. Jimmy Mathias (Jr., Stephens City, Va.) and Matt Helm (So., Downingtown, Pa.) led off with back-to-back singles. Chris Monaco (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) bunted them over and pitcher Tommy Warner's throw to first was wild, allowing both runners to score and advancing Monaco to third. Monaco then scored on an Adam Ptacek (Sr., Assaria, Kan.) suicide squeeze.
Kentucky (10-3) responded with two in its half of the third on a two-run single to center field by Sean Coughlin. But Marshall came right back in the fourth inning with two runs. After Roddy Stieger (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) singled to lead off and moved to second on a groundout, he advanced to third on a single by Brit Vincent (Jr., Bowling Green, Ky.). Mathias brought Stieger home with a sacrifice fly. The Herd then loaded the bases and Ptacek scored Vincent with a single to left. Helm was thrown out at the plate, but the Herd took a 5-2 lead out of the inning.
Kentucky rallied in the fifth inning to tie the score. After loading the bases against Marshall starter Adam Dobies (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and reliever Andrew Blain (Fr., Huntington, W.Va.), the Wildcats pushed three across against Alan Gentry (Jr., Hot Springs, Ark.) on a Ryan Strieby walk and a two-run single by Michael Bertram.
The Wildcats pushed in front in the sixth inning against Jimmy Stanley (Fr., Lexington, Ky.) on a two-out single by Antone DeJesus which scored Mike Brown.
Marshall knotted the score in the eighth. Brendan Murphy (Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn) led off with a double and was lifted for pinch runner Brent Mason (Sr., Sherwood, Ark.). One out later, Aaron Levinson (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) hit a single up the middle through the drawn-in infield to tie the score.
After the Wildcat defense made two diving stops to end the top of the ninth, the offense scored the winning in the ninth. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, a Nick Wolle (Jr., Coatesville, Pa.) balk moved the runners up to second and third with no out. After an intentional walk, Bryson Meyers (Sr., Oakland, Md.) came in and recorded a strikeout. Brendon Bump (Sr., Lawrence, Kan.) was brought in to face Strieby, who took Bump the opposite way to right field for the game-winning single.
Marshall returns to action at noon Saturday, taking on Niagara in a doubleheader at University Heights Field in Huntington. The teams also will play one game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
