HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Mason Chapman (Fr., Barboursville, W.Va.) hit a single to center field in the eighth inning to score Matt Helm (Jr., Downingtown, Pa.) and push the Marshall baseball team to a 6-5 win and three-game series sweep Sunday at University Heights Field. Marshall improves to 13-4 on the season, including a 9-0 mark in one-run games.

Helm led the Marshall offense with a 3-for-3 performance, while Nick Damas (Jr., Willow Springs, Ill.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Catcher Tommy Johnson (Jr., Gaithersburg, Md.) added two hits and threw out two baserunners attempting to steal.

Andrew Blain (So., Huntington, W.Va.) pitched the eighth and ninth innings to move to 3-0 this season. Blain pitched out of jams in both innings and left runners stranded at the corners in the ninth to seal the win.

Marshall executed well to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Helm led off with a bunt single and moved to second on a Blake Sanders (Fr., Ponte Verda Beach, Fla.) sacrifice. Helm then moved to third on a Matt Weber (0-4) wild pitch and scored on Chapman's bloop single to left-center field. It was Chapman's third game-winning hit of the season.

Marshall scored an unearned run in the first inning, benefiting from a dropped fly ball in left field by Ian Choy. The Herd scored when Brendan Murphy (Sr., Chattanooga, Tenn.) hit into a double play, bringing in Chapman.

Canisius (4-15) scored all of its runs in the fourth inning against Marshall starter Adam Kuhr (Jr., Mason, Ohio). Kevin Reimer singled with the bases loaded to tie the game at one. Ryan Asis followed with a two-run double to right-center field, and three batters later, Adam Donato singled up the middle to score two more runs and give the Golden Griffins a 5-1 lead.

Marshall wasted no time rallying, as it scored three times in the bottom of the fourth. Helm hit a single to score Brandon Casamassima (So., Colleyville, Texas). Two batters later, Damas singled to right field to score Johnson and Casamassima and bring Marshall within a run, 5-4.

Kuhr went a career-best five innings for Marshall and had just the one bad inning, as he allowed five earned runs, six hits and three walks while striking out two. Tyler Gatrell (Fr., Boyd County, Ky.) followed with two scoreless innings of relief. Mike Goemans started for Canisius and went 5 1/3 innings, giving up five runs (four earned), eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Marshall travels to James Madison Tuesday and Wednesday for 2:30 p.m. contests. The Herd then opens Conference USA play next Friday against Tulane at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va. Tickets for all home Conference USA games are available now at or by calling 1-800-THE-HERD.
