April 11, 2006
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Behind a four-hit, two-home run performance by Adam Frederick (Sr., Franklin, Pa.), the Marshall baseball team whipped Morehead State, 15-3, at Allen Field in Morehead, Ky. Frederick reached base six times and went 4-for-5 at the plate. It is the second multiple-home run game of his career, as he also swatted two on May 11, 2003, vs. Akron, and it gives Frederick a career-high seven homers this season.
Roddy Stieger (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Marshall. Chris Cummings (Sr., Huntington, W.Va.) notched the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and moves to 2-0 on the season. Dan Klausmeier (1-1) took the loss for Morehead State after allowing eight earned runs and six hits in two innings of work.
Marshall (13-16) sent 10 batters to the plate in a six-run first inning. Adam Ptacek (Sr., Assaria, Kan.) led off with a walk and scored when Frederick homered high over the 25-foot-high fence in right-center field. One out later, Stieger singled, Rich Russell (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) walked and Brent Mason (Sr., Sherwood, Ark.) singled to load the bases. Brit Vincent (Jr., Bowling Green, Ky.) walked to force home Stieger, and Tommy Johnson (So., Gaithersburg, Md.) singled to right to bring home Russell and Mason and give Marshall a 6-0 advantage.
Morehead State (12-19) scored twice in the bottom of the first. Struggling to find the strike zone, Marshall starter Tom Ponietowicz (Fr., Norristown, Pa.) walked Dustin Miles and Ryan Kinder, then one out later surrendered a run-scoring double to Donald Cheney. Ponietowicz then fired a wild pitch to allow Kinder to cross the plate.
Marshall got both runs back in the second inning. Frederick led off with a homer to center field. With one out, Stieger doubled to left center and then stole third base. He scored when Klausmeier uncorked a wild pitch.
Morehead State scored a run in the third inning, with all the action coming after two were out. Chris McCaslin doubled, and Nick Bobrowski was hit by a pitch. After Blain Williams walked, Eric Parker was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Cummings came in the relieve Ponietowicz and induced Nick Nail to pop out to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.
Marshall responded with three unearned runs in the fourth inning. Frederick led off with a single. Brendan Murphy (Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn.) grounded into a fielder's choice, but the throw to second was wild, allowing Frederick to reach second. Stieger followed with an RBI single, and Russell hit into a fielder's choice, but pitcher Rob Saunders' throw to second went into center field, allowing Murphy to score. One out later, Vincent grounded out to score Stieger and give the Herd an 11-3 lead.
Marshall added two runs in the eighth inning, as Jimmy Mathias (Jr., Stephens City, Va.) hit a single to score Chris Peak (Jr., Barboursville, W.Va.) and Johnson grounded into a double play to plate Jimmy Stanley (Fr., Lexington, Ky.) and give Marshall a 15-3 bulge.
Marshall travels to UAB Friday for an 8 p.m. contest in the first of a three-game Conference USA series. The teams also play at 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
