Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Marshall baseball team scored a season-high 22 runs and pounded out 19 hits en route to a 22-8 victory at UAB Friday at Young Memorial Field. The win was Marshall's first ever on the road in Conference USA play, and the 22 runs is the highest run total ever for the Marshall baseball program in a conference road game, topping the previous high of 21, set in 1988 at VMI when the Thundering Herd was a member of the Southern Conference.

Chris Monaco (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.), Roddy Stieger (Sr., West Chester, Ohio) and Brent Mason (Sr., Sherwood, Ark.) drove in a five runs apiece for the Herd - a career high for each - while Monaco hit his first career home run - a grand slam - to punctuate the evening in the eighth inning. Adam Frederick (Sr., Franklin, Pa.) had three hits to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and Adam Ptacek (Sr., Assaria, Kan.) also had a three-hit night. The Herd scored at least two runs off each of UAB's six pitchers.

Jeremy Slone (Jr., Paintsville, Ky.) earned the victory to move to 2-4 on the season. He tossed six innings, allowing five runs (two earned), nine hits and two walks while striking out six. Mike Gielarowski (Fr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned his first career save by tossing the final three innings. UAB starter Jacob Legg (1-2) took the defeat after giving up three runs and four hits in one-plus inning.

Marshall (14-16, 2-8 C-USA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Stieger, then tacked on five in the second, as Stieger laced a two-run single and Mason hit a bases-clearing double.

UAB (13-22, 0-7) countered with back-to-back two-run innings to slice the lead to 7-4, but Marshall answered with a five-run fourth inning to take a 12-4 lead. Mason had a two-run double to start the scoring and Ptacek had a two-run single, and Brit Vincent (Jr., Bowling Green, Ky.) scampered home on a fielding error.

The Herd added two in the fifth. Stieger grounded into a double play to score Frederick, and Vincent ripped a single to score Brendan Murphy (Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn.). Marshall pushed the lead to 18-4 in the sixth on a Monaco RBI single, a UAB fielding error which scored Monaco and a Murphy sacrifice fly.

After UAB scored a run in the sixth, Marshall played add-on in the seventh with a run on a Ptacek single. The Herd tacked four more in the eighth on Monaco's grand slam.

UAB scored three runs in the ninth to round out the busy night of scoring.

The teams continue the three-game series at 3 p.m. Saturday.
