CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Southern Miss pitcher Cliff Russum fired a one-hit shutout in dominating the Marshall baseball team, 5-0, Sunday at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va. Russum (5-4) allowed only a solid opposite-field single by Adam Ptacek (Sr., Assaria, Kan.) in the second inning. He walked four and struck out six.

Marshall starter Chris Koutsavlis (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) allowed five runs, nine hits and five walks while striking out five over seven innings. He falls to 6-4 in taking the defeat.

Southern Miss (31-16, 7-8 C-USA) opened the scoring with a three-run third inning. Marc Maddox led off with a double and scored two outs later on a Jody Blount single. Drew Carson followed with a two-run home run to left field.

In the fifth inning, the Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 5-0. Bo Davis hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Blount and Trey Sutton dropped a bunt single to score Carson.

Marshall (19-21, 6-12) received an inning of scoreless relief pitching each from Bryson Meyers (Sr., Oakland, Md.) and Nick Wolle (Jr., Coatesville, Pa.).

The Thundering Herd travels to Richmond, Ky., Wednesday for a 3 p.m. contest at Eastern Kentucky, then goes to New Orleans over the weekend for a three-game Conference USA series at No. 20 Tulane. The series will be played at Zephyr Field, home of the New Orleans Zephyrs, triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
