CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- In a rematch of an April 3 meeting in Richmond, Ky., Marshall’s baseball team received three-hit efforts from Gray Stafford and Alfredo Brito, and the Thundering Herd defeated Eastern Kentucky 7-4 Wednesday afternoon at V.A. Memorial Stadium. 

Marshall (18-26, 5-10 Conference USA) evened the two-game season series and won its second game in as many days.  EKU fell to 15-27 overall. 

Brito put the Herd on top in the early going when he doubled and scored in the bottom of the second.  Marshall added another run in the same inning when Sergio Leon launched a two-out double to right-center, scoring Aaron Bossi

EKU answered with a run in the third, but Marshall broke the game open with a run in the third and three more in the fourth.  Stafford doubled in two runs in that inning before Brito singled in one more three batters later. 

Marshall starting pitcher Alex Thackston (1-3) was the winning pitcher after 5.2 innings of two-run ball.  Thackston struck out a pair while conceding five hits and a walk. 

The Colonels put together a rally in which they scored in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, but Marshall’s pen held off EKU en route to the victory. 

Josh King finished the game and picked up his team-leading fifth save of the season.  Freshman Sam Hunter and sophomore Kyle Kessler each struck out one in a shared eighth inning. 

Stafford was 3-for-4 with a two runs and two RBI’s.  Brito went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.  Both men doubled. 

EKU starter Matt Lynch (0-4) suffered the loss, giving up three (earned) runs on five hits and three walks over three innings. 

Marshall will be on the road over the weekend for a three-game Conference USA series at fifth-place Memphis (27-19, 9-9 C-USA).  Game times are set for 7:30 p.m., 3 p.m., and 2 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
