MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—In its final series of 2014, Marshall baseball faced off in an inaugural series with new Conference USA member Middle Tennessee. The Herd fell 6-2 in the opening game.
Tennessee native TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) returned to the Volunteer State with a bang, going 2-for-4 with a home run.
“It felt great getting to come home and be back here,” Diffenderfer said of the moment. “It was pretty cool to be back and play against guys I know and to be able to get us on the board like that.”
Facing the national leader in strikeouts in MTSU’s Zac Curtis, the Herd attacked first, scoring two in the second inning.
Diffenderfer led off the inning, smacking a ball deep over the left field wall in his homecoming debut.
Designated hitter Spencer Iacovone (Cincinnati, Ohio) then knocked a double to score junior Eric Escobedo (Troup, Ga.), who boarded on a walk and make the score 2-0. Iacovone collected his third hit of the season, all of them extra-base hits.
Middle Tennessee replied in the fourth, plating two runs off three hits, an error, and wild pitch. The Blue Raiders scored four in the bottom of the seventh off four hits for the final lead change of the game, finalizing the score at 6-2.
Despite not recording a hit, Escobedo scored and picked up two stolen bases, bringing his season total to five.
The Herd returns to Reese Smith Field Saturday for a 7 p.m. showdown.
