Jan. 27, 2011
IRVING, Texas – The Conference USA preseason baseball poll and awards were announced by the league office on Thursday as voted on by the coaching staffs across the conference. Marshall was picked to finish eighth in the standings, while senior Victor Gomez was selected as the catcher on the preseason all-conference team.
Despite finishing fourth in the conference during the regular season by winning a school record 12 games against C-USA opponents, the Thundering Herd was still picked to finish in the eighth slot out of nine league teams.
Marshall returns seven starters from the 2010 squad including Victor Gomez, who also earned National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason Third Team All-American recognition. Gomez holds school records in homers (46), RBI (172) and total bases (414). He is just 22 hits shy of breaking the Herd record for career base knocks (250) and is currently tied with Rice’s Anthony Rendon for the active lead in the conference in homers. Gomez is a career .351 hitter overall and has registered a .367 average against C-USA pitchers.
Left off the all-conference preseason team was right-handed pitcher Arik Sikula. Last season, Sikula was named a First Team All-Conference USA starter, finishing the year with a 6-5 record and 3.88 ERA. He became the first pitcher from Marshall to earn first team all-conference recognition.
The Herd opens the regular season on Fri., Feb. 18 against Miami (OH) at the College of Charleston Tournament in Charleston, S.C. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
