Baseball Loses to George Mason, 11-4
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Patriots of George Mason University scored four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to gain an 11-4 victory over the Thundering Herd Saturday at Patriots Point Field.
The Herd started off the scoring in the top of the second when Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) hit a one out double and proceeded to steal third. Marshall Murray (Walnut Creek, CA) hit a two out double to bring in Larmore and give the Herd a 1-0 lead.
Starting pitcher Chris Koutsavlis (Pittsburgh, PA) pitched two strong innings before running into trouble in the third. Patriot Josh Campbell reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. The next batter, Jeff Palumbo walked, which brought up Bruce Baldwin, who hit a fly ball to right field, which was dropped by Brad Helm (Downington, PA). The error by Helm scored Campbell to tie the game.
The Patriots took a 2-1 after Chris Looze hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Palumbo. George Mason took a 3-1 lead in the fourth after a homerun by Robby Jacobsen.
Freshman Brian Chrisman (Pittsburgh, PA) was brought in to pitch in the sixth inning. He got out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, but was not so lucky in the seventh. After walking Nick Shimer to load the bases with one out, senior Patrick Molinari (Plainfield, IL) was brought in. He allowed a grand slam to Adam Innerst to give the Patriots a 7-1 lead.
Marshall added a run in the eighth to cut the Patriots lead to five after Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) hit an RBI single with the bases loaded to bring in Chris Monaco (Tuscon, AZ).
The momentum was shortlived, however, as George Mason added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 11-1.
In the top of the ninth, the Herd battled back. Joe Glevenyak (West Palm Beach, FL) reached base on a Patriot error. Marshall Murray followed that up with a sinlge to advance Glevenyak to second. Pinch hitter Matt Megee (Georgetown, DE) struck out, but shortstop Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) hit a one out double to score Glevenyak. A single by Chris Monaco brought in Murray, but the run was stopped there as George Mason pitcher Jason Mills recorded the final two outs to secure the win.
Koutsavlis took the loss for the Herd. His record drops to 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA. Patriot starter Stacen Gant pitched eight innings to earn the win.
The loss drops the Herd to a record of 0-5. They look to rebound on Sunday when they take on the Charleston Southern Buccaneers at 1 p.m. Log on to www.HerdZone.com for updates directly after the game.
