@HerdBaseball Visits Western Carolina for Three-Game Series
First meeting between the teams since 2008
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall baseball team visits former Southern Conference foe, Western Carolina, this weekend for a three-game series in Cullowhee, N.C. The series is scheduled to begin Friday at 4 p.m., with Saturday’s game set for 2 p.m., and concluding at 1 pm. Sunday.

Tommy Lane, the reigning 2016 C-USA Newcomer of the Year, has started his senior campaign off strong. He is 5-of-12 from the plate, good for a .417 batting average. He has two RBIs and an on-base percentage of .563. The Pendleton, Ore., native was named the 26th best first baseman in the country by D1Baseball.com in a preseason article.
The Marshall (1-3) pitching staff features six student-athletes with a 0.00 ERA – Hunter Sexton, Parker Beine, Nicholas Newton, Matt Reed, Tyler Ratliff and Jacob Niggemeyer. Sexton leads the Herd with 5.2 innings pitched and five strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
Western Carolina (2-2) dropped a heartbreaker on Wednesday at No. 12 Clemson. The Catamounts led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers rallied by scoring five runs in the seventh and eighth inning. Shortstop Brett Pope led WCU at the plate with three hits, while center fielder Matt Smith had a team-high two RBIs.
The Catamounts began their season at the Caravelle Resort’s “Baseball at the Beach” tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. WCU dropped its first game to St. John’s, 14-3. Western Carolina bounced back in its second game with a 5-4 win over the reigning national champion Coastal Carolina. WCU also defeated North Carolina A&T, 16-7.
