HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall sophomore Aaron Blair has been named Marshall's student-athlete of the week for the week ending March 11.
In one start last week, Blair struck out a career high 13 hitters while allowing just two hits and one run to help the Thundering Herd take home a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb.
Blair moved to 1-2 this season, and his ERA dropped to 3.57. His performance on Friday seemed to set the tone for the rest of the weekend as Marshall went on to complete the series sweep thanks to eight strikeouts from Mike Mason on Saturday and eight innings of shutout pitching from the MU staff on Sunday.
Blair struck out three in the second and fifth innings and another two in the third and sixth as every member of Gardner-Webb's starting lineup went down on strikes at some point during Blair's 7.0 innings pitched. Blair struck out the side on only nine pitches in the second inning and at one point worked a streak of 20 straight strikes. During that stretch, seven consecutive GWU hitters saw nothing but strikes.
Working in a close game throughout his entire outing, Blair retired eight straight hitters and recorded outs on 13 straight at-bats.
