Liberty Tops Herd, 14-5
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Thundering Herd baseball team suffered their second straight loss to the Liberty Flames by a score of 14-5 Monday at Worthington Stadium.
Things started out rough for Marshall. After the Herd was retired in order in the top of the first, Liberty came out swinging. Herd starter Grant Harper (Grayson, KY) struggled, giving up four runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, freshman Troy Wilson (Saegertown, PA) was brought in and got the final out of the inning.
The Flames struck again in the second, adding on three more runs. Troy Wilson walked the first two batters to bring up Flame Jeff Brown, who hit a double to center to bring in one run. Carlos Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the second run of the inning, and the Flames notched one more hit to score a third run and take a 7-0 lead at the end of two innings.
Marshall notched one run in the top of the third. Mike Koitsopoulos (Markham, Ont.) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on passed ball. Chris Monaco (Tucson, AZ) hit another single to advance Koitsopoulos to third. Monaco proceeded to steal second, his 15th stolen base of the season. With one out, Adam Frederick (Franklin, PA) hit into a fielderís choice to bring in Koitsopoulos for the Herdís first run of the game. Francois Larmore (Magnolia, NJ) struck out to end the inning.
Liberty added on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Wilson allowed a hit and was replaced by Andrew Davis (Charleston, WV). Davis walked the next batter and allowed a two-run double to Flame Jeremiah Boles. After the next two batters reached base, Adam Dobies (Pittsburgh, PA) was brought in and gave up a two-run single to give Liberty an 11-1 lead. They added on three more tuns in the sixth to take a 14-1 lead.
The Herd tallied two runs in the eighth inning. Aaron Jamieson (Lindsay, Ont.) reached base on an error to start the inning. With one out, Josh McConnell (Phenix City, AL) notched a single. After Frederick struck out, Larmore got an RBI single. That brought up Matt Megee (Georgetown, DE), who notched an RBI single, his first RBI with Marshall. That made it 14-3 after the top of the eighth.
In the ninth, Nick Wolle (Coatesville, PA) hit a one out single. After Jamieson struck out, Chris Peak (Barboursville, WV) came up and notched his first collegiate hit. McConnell notched his second single of the day to load the bases. Wolle scored on a passed ball during Frederickís at-bat, and Frederick notched an RBI single for MUís fifth run of the day. Larmore grounded out to end the game and give LU a 14-5 win.
The win improves Libertyís record to 7-8 while the Herd drops to 8-9. Grant Harper took the loss, dropping his record to 2-2. Liberty had 18 hits and limited Marshall to 12.
