HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Marshall baseball opens its road Conference USA schedule with a three-game series against the No. 25 Southern Miss Golden Eagles at Pete Taylor Park.
The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. (ET) on Friday. The final game of the series is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. (ET). The Hattiesburg area is expected to have inclement weather on Saturday, and should the game get postponed, the final game will take place at its normal scheduled time of Noon (ET) on Sunday.

HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall is coming off a disappointing 7-1 loss to the Tennessee Volunteers on Wednesday night in Knoxville, Tenn. The Herd was led at the plate by Cory Garrastazu and Shane Hanon. Garrastazu was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while Hanon was 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Sophomore hurler Wade Martin has been the ace of the pitching staff for the Thundering Herd. The Wheelersburg, Ohio, native holds a 2-1 record through 25.2 innings pitched. He has started in all five games that he has appeared in, ranking 26th in the NCAA. Martin ranks fifth for ERA in Conference USA with a 2.45 ERA. He also ranks 11th for strikeouts with 26 and first for batters struck out looking with 15.
The Thundering Herd earned its sixth straight Conference USA series win last weekend by taking two of three games over UTSA. The streak dates back to mid-April 2016. Marshall has won nine of its last 12 games, and is 8-3 in March.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Southern Miss (17-4, 3-0 C-USA) enters this weekend series having won its last eight games. The Golden Eagles swept Louisiana Tech to open league play last weekend, while also picking up wins against Xavier, Columbia and Mississippi State during its win streak.
The Golden Eagles are led at the plate by reigning C-USA Hitter of the Week Mason Irby. Irby hit safely in all five games last week and scored 10 runs for Southern Miss. He finished the weekend with nine hits and had his first homer of the season to help defeat nationally ranked Louisiana Tech. On the season, Irby holds a .324 batting average with 24 hits, six doubles and eight RBIs.
