HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall baseball will be on the road Wednesday for a 3 p.m. meeting with the No. 8 Kentucky Wildcats at Cliff Hagan Stadium in Lexington, Ky.
Marshall Falls to No. 23 Wildcats 7-3
The Marshall baseball team held an early lead but ultimately fell to No. 23 Kentucky by a score of 7-3 Wednesday evening here at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The contest will be a rematch of the teams' first midweek game of the 2012 season when UK defeated the Thundering Herd 7-3. Kentucky (18-5, 4-2 SEC) was on an unbeaten streak of 12 then and enters this year's matchup having defeated No. 14 Mississippi State in a three-game series its last time out.
In last year's meeting, Sergio Leon went 1-for-2 and Isaac Ballou finished 1-for-3. The pair had first-inning RBIs that gave the Herd an early lead, but Kentucky responded with runs in five of its eight frames.
Freshman southpaw Alex Thackston (0-1, 4.80) will make his fourth start for Marshall on Wednesday and will be challenged by Wildcat right-hander Chandler Shepherd (1-0, 3.10). Shepherd has appeared in eight games this season, all in relief.
Kentucky's offense is fueled by A.J. Reed who leads the Wildcats in nearly every statistical category. The pitching/hitting sophomore went five innings and took the winning decision against Marshall last season and currently bats .356 with six homers and 28 RBIs. Reed's on-base percentage of .462 is tops for the Wildcats and 10th in the Southeastern Conference.
Herd first baseman Nathan Gomez leads Marshall in hitting at .333 which is good for eighth in Conference USA. Gomez and fellow senior Isaac Ballou rank eighth and ninth in C-USA on-base percentage at .414 and .413, respectively.
