Baseball Drops Contest to Kentucky 14-4

    LEXINGTON, Ky.?The Marshall University baseball team fell to 10-15 on the season with a 14-4 loss to the University of Kentucky. The win moves the Wildcats to 14-17 on the season.

    Marshall jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Matt White doubled off the left field wall and scored when Craig Dziedziejko hit a chopper over the third baseman. Dziedziejko made it 2-0 when he scored on a single by Clay DeSantis.

    Kentucky, however, was able to answer with three in the bottom of the inning to grab the lead. The Wildcats loaded the bases with nobody out and Brad Pickrell scored on a single by Robert Newton. Then, Seth Morris hit into a fielder?s choice that allowed Caleb Stewart to cross the plate to tie the game. The Wildcats grabbed the lead for good when Mike Ferris hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Spencer Graeter.

    Thundering Herd starter Grant Harper, returning from an injury, lasted only one-third of an inning, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks.

    UK extended their lead to 5-2 in the second with two more runs. A sacrifice fly by Pickrell scored Emory Davies and Stewart hit a sharp single up the middle to score Jesse Barber.

    The Wildcats added another run in the fourth, but Marshall was able to cut the lead down to three with a run in the fifth. After David Colangelo singled and stole second, Craig Dziedziejko hit a double into the left field corner to bring Colangelo home.

    The Thundering Herd would not get any closer, however, as the Wildcats erupted for eight runs on only four hits in the sixth. Three walks and an error by Marshall aided the Wildcat outburst. The highlight of the inning was when Seth Morris tripled of the center field wall with the bases loaded to give the Wildcats an 11-3 lead.

    Marshall was able to score a run in the seventh, but was unable to threatened again as Kentucky went onto a 14-4 victory.

    Craig Snipp (3-1) picked up the victory as eight Wildcat pitchers made an appearance in the game.

    Harper (2-3) took the loss for the Thundering Herd.

    Dziedziejko led the way for Marshall, going two for three with a run and two RBI?s.

    Marshall will return to action on Wednesday, April 10, when they take on the University of Rio Grande at 2:00 p.m. at University Heights. Freshman Aaron Smith will get the start for the Thundering Herd.
