HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall baseball team hosts the FIU Panthers in a pivotal Conference USA three-game series at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley, W.Va. The Thundering Herd and Panthers will open the series on Friday at 4 p.m. It continues on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at Noon.

Marshall (18-19, 7-8 C-USA) is currently in a three-way tie for sixth place through five weeks of Conference USA action. The Thundering Herd is tied with Middle Tennessee and UTSA. Southern Miss sit atop the league with a 12-3 record, followed by Florida Atlantic (11-4), Old Dominion (10-5), Charlotte (9-6) and FIU (8-7).
Senior Sam Finfer displayed his power at the plate Wednesday night in a heart-breaking loss to Ohio. Finfer recorded his third multi-homer game of the season by hitting two two-run homers. The Bellevue, Wash., native ranks second in Conference USA for home runs with 11. He ranks third in slugging percentage (.628) and eighth in total bases (86). Finfer has 11 multi-hit and six multi-RBI games this season.
Saturday starting pitcher Wade Martin has been the ace of the staff for the Herd this season. The sophomore holds the fifth-best ERA in Conference USA at 2.63. The Wheelersburg, Ohio native is seventh in strikeouts (57) and leads the conference in batters struck out looking with 24. Martin led Marshall to a 2-1 win over UAB by pitching a career-high nine innings.
Head Coach Jeff Waggoner is on the verge of a career milestone. Waggoner is one win shy of 250 victories in his career and with the Thundering Herd. Waggoner led Marshall to a record season in 2016, by winning a program-record 34 wins and 21 conference wins. He was named the 2016 Keith LeClair C-USA Coach of the Year.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
FIU (23-15, 8-7 C-USA) travels to the Mountain State coming off a two-game midweek series sweep of in-state rival Florida Gulf Coast University. The Panthers won 12-5 on Tuesday night and shutout the Eagles on Wednesday night, 7-0. FIU was led by Zach Files in game one by going 4-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored. Catcher JC Escarra was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in game two.
The Panthers are 8-4 on the road this season and has won three-of-five C-USA series. FIU took two-out-of-three from Rice, UAB and UTSA, while dropping series to Charlotte and Southern Miss.

Marshall travels south down I-64 to face the Morehead State Eagles on Wednesday, April 26 at 5 p.m. It will be the second meeting between the teams this season. The Thundering Herd defeated the Eagles, 4-3, on April 11 with a Tyler Ratliff walk-off home run in the bottom of the night.
