Sophomore designated hitter/infielder Victor Gomez earned this week's Conference USA Hitter of the Week as announced by the league office, Monday, for his outstanding performance during this week's baseball action.
Gomez enjoyed an incredibly productive week at the plate, concluding it by going 4-for-5 at No. 1 Rice with two homers (a two-run shot and a three-run blast), five RBIs and three runs scored to help lift Marshall to an 11-7 victory. Sunday's victory over the Owls was the first in program history, and was the third win over a ranked opponent so far this season. Gomez's first homer, his 13th of the season, came with the score tied at 5-5 in the seventh. The two-run homer put Marshall up 7-5, before he clouted his three-run dinger an inning later. Gomez also homered in Friday evening's 7-5 loss to Rice and added a double. The second-year slugger started the week by smashing a three-run long ball in the first inning of Marshall's 5-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday. Gomez finished last week's action with a .438 average (7-for-16) with four homers, 10 RBI, a double and five runs scored while registering a staggering 1.250 slugging percentage.
