Kurt Lipton Named Marshall Student Athlete of the Week

April 27, 2010

Senior Kurt Lipton of the Thundering Herd baseball team has been named Marshall Student Athlete of the Week.

Lipton earned Conference USA Hitter of the Week by leading the Thundering Herd offense to a perfect 5-0 week and a series sweep of conference foe UCF, announced by league officials Apr. 26.

Lipton collected eight hits in 18 at bats (.444), including three doubles and two triples as the Thundering Herd moved into second place in league standings, the highest in program history. Winners of seven straight, Marshall received a perfect 3-for-3 day with two triples and a trio of RBI from Lipton in the first game of a doubleheader vs. Coppin State on Apr. 20. He has now tied the school record for triples in a season (6) with David Colangelo, who completed the feat in 2001.

The Boca Raton, Fla., native slugged .833 for the week and knocked in the game-tying run with a RBI double in the second game of the UCF series in the bottom of the ninth. Lipton had eight RBI during the five games.
