IRVING, Texas – Marshall baseball’s Wade Martin was named to the 2017 Conference USA InTouch Credit Union Baseball All-Academic Team, as announced by the league office Monday.
Martin, a two-time honoree of the Commissioner’s Honor Roll and recipient of the Conference USA Academic Medal, boasts a 4.00 cumulative GPA as a health care management major. This is the Wheelersburg, Ohio native first time as a member of the C-USA All-Academic team.
“This is a great honor for Wade,” head coach Jeff Waggoner said. “He has represented Marshall University and the baseball program very well, with his hard work and dedication on and off the field. He is the true definition of a student-athlete. We are excited about his future.”
Martin was the ace of the staff for the Thundering Herd by starting in all 14 games in which he appeared in. He finished with a 3-4 record and a 4.24 ERA through 87 innings pitched. He ranks 20th in the NCAA with 14 starts and is 150th for strikeouts with 77. Martin ranks in the top-10 of four pitching categories in conference play – first for innings pitched (68.1), first for batters struck out looking (21), fifth for strikeouts (56) and seventh for opposing batting average (.237).
The sophomore had a pair of career outings over Conference USA opponents Middle Tennessee and UAB. Martin tossed a career-high 11 strikeouts in a no decision against the Blue Raiders. He earned a win over the Blazers by throwing a career-high nine innings in a 2-1 win. Martin finished the season with wins over UAB and UTSA in league play.
This is the third-straight year that Marshall has had at least one student-athlete selected. Chase Boster (2013-16) was selected in 2015, while DJ Gee (2015-16) was chosen in 2016.
Martin is one 13 student-athletes selected to the C-USA All-Academic Team. 10 of the 12 baseball-member schools are represented on the team, with Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss placing two members on the team.
