Baseball's Ryan Kiel Picked in MLB Amateur Draft

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Senior Ryan Kiel was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 37th round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft on Wednesday afternoon.  The left-handed pitcher became the third player selected from the Thundering Herd baseball squad.  Junior RHP Kevin Shackelford and 2010 signee Aaron Blair were both picked in the 21st round on Tuesday.

Kiel racked up the appearances during his four-year stint on the mound for the Herd.  The Los Gatos, Calif., native pitched in 78 games, ranking fourth-most in MU history.  He compiled a 13-9 record over his career, while logging 145.1 innings with 118 strikeouts.

During his final season in Huntington, Kiel finished with a 2-1 record in 24 total appearances, including six starts.  He logged 41.0 frames and fanned 32 on the hill.
