HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall University baseball player Tyler Gatrell was picked up by the Kansas City Royals announced on Thursday. The senior right-handed pitcher is coming off his best season for the Thundering Herd baseball squad in 2010.
Gatrell, a reliable righty setup man, is the 15th player or signee under head coach Jeff Waggoner who has been drafted or picked up by a Major League Baseball team in the past three years.
The Boyd County, Ky., native posted a 5-2 record in his final season with the Herd, including four victories against Conference USA opponents. He finished with a 3.75 ERA in 36.0 innings, while allowing just 32 hits, collecting 32 strikeouts and holding opponents to a .244 batting average.
He pitched in 32 games on the season and worked in 91 contests over his four seasons, the second-most pitching appearances in Marshall baseball history. He ended his career with an 8-6 record, totaling 105.2 innings with 80 strikeouts.
