Finfer Named to 2017 ABCA/Rawlings Mideast All-Region First Team
Led the Thundering Herd with 18 home runs and 51 RBI
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Marshall baseball senior Sam Finfer has been named to the 2017 ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Mideast All-Region First Team, as announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday.
The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee.
Finfer was named to the All-Conference USA First Team and was selected as a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award for Breakout Player of the Year in 2017. The Bellevue, Wash., native held a .338 batting average and led the Herd with a .410 on-base and .692 slugging percentage. Finfer led Conference USA at the end of the regular season with 18 home runs, good for the fifth-most in a single season in Marshall history. He finished with a team-high 68 hits, 17 doubles, 51 RBI and 139 total bases. He had 19 multi-hit games, including two of four hits. He was second on the team with 11 multi-RBI games.
Finfer joins former teammates Aaron Bossi, Tyler Ratliff, current assistant coach Victor Gomez and Nate Lape as the fifth Herd player to be named to the ABCA All-Mideast Region Team. Bossi and Ratliff were selected in 2016, while Gomez and Lape were chosen in 2008.
The Thundering Herd finished in ninth place in Conference USA this season with a 25-29 record. The 25-win mark is the seventh-most in a single season in Herd history.
ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first-team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 17.
