Baltimore Orioles Sign Herd Pitcher Jesse Fernandez|
July 12, 2012
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Major League Baseball’s Baltimore Orioles signed Marshall relief pitcher Jesse Fernandez earlier this week.
Fernandez is the third member of the most recent Thundering Herd pitching staff to sign with a professional baseball team, following Joe Church and Mike Mason who were selected in the 17th and 24th rounds of this year’s amateur draft. Fernandez marks the 25th player under Marshall head coach Jeff Waggoner to receive an opportunity to play at the next level.
After signing Fernandez, the Orioles sent the right-hander to Aberdeen, Md. where he will play for the Aberdeen IronBirds, their Class-A affiliate in the Short-Season New York-Penn League.
Fernandez, who transferred to Marshall for his junior and senior seasons, appeared in 21 games during the 2012 campaign. The closer was 1-1 with four saves and a 2.96 earned run average.
