HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Former Thundering Herd outfielder Rhett Stafford hit his sixth professional home run while former Herd relievers Joe Church and Kevin Shackelford each took winning decisions in the fourth installment of Marshall baseball’s summer update.
Stafford’s eighth-inning home run gave life to his Vermont Lake Monsters late in the game as they would add four runs in the ninth, nearly erasing a 6-0 deficit. Stafford drew a walk with two out and the tying run on second in the ninth, but the rally stalled in the succeeding at-bat.
Church came away victorious in an extra-inning relief effort where he worked around a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the 10th.
Shackelford took his win in a long relief role against Lake County. After falling behind 8-3, the Timber Rattlers scored five runs in the fifth before sending Shackelford in to pitch the fifth, sixth, and seventh.
Starting pitcher Dan Straily, meanwhile, garnered more attention when he struck out 13 in seven innings of work in a 1-0 loss to Las Vegas. Straily was dealt the loss when he was taken deep on a solo home run to lead off the fifth.
