HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Another home run by Isaac Ballou (Nationals) and three saves by Arik Sikula (Blue Jays) highlighted last week’s action as 10 former Marshall baseball players continued their professional careers.

Details for each are found below:

Aaron Blair – Pitcher – Hillsboro Hops (Short Season Northwest League; Class A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks)

Blair (who was with the Thundering Herd from 2011-2013) pitched five innings of two-run ball in his only start last week.  It was the first time the right-hander was left in long enough to qualify for the win, but he took no decision as the Hops once again waited until extra innings to come away with the victory.  Blair gave up his runs on a solo homer in the second then on a two-out rally in the third where a walk and a stolen base were converted on an RBI-single.  Blair struck out six and walked two in what was his fifth start.

Blair’s season stats: 5 GS, 0-0, 3.50 ERA, 18.0 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 7 BB, 17 K

Isaac Ballou – OF – Auburn Doubledays (Short Season New York-Penn League; Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals)

Ballou (2010-2013) hit his second career home run as part of an 8-for-26 (.308) effort last week.  The solo blast led off the third inning of a two-RBI game for Ballou (who finished 3-for-5 with a stolen base and a run), but the Doubledays found no more offense and fell to Williamsport 3-2.

Ballou’s season stats: .271/.382/.364, 15 R, 13 RBI, 2 HR, 17 BB, 16 K, 5 SB

Joe Church – Relief Pitcher – Fort Wayne TinCaps (Midwest League; Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres)

Church (2009-2012) appeared in one game last week, a two-and-a-third-inning scoreless stint against Cedar Rapids.  Chuck allowed two hits and a walk while striking out three.

Church’s season stats (w/ FW): 15 G, 1-1, 5.72 ERA, 1 save, 28.1 IP, 36 H, 19 R, 18 ER, 13 BB, 23 K

Mike Mason – Relief Pitcher – Asheville Tourists (South Atlantic League; Class A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies)

Mason (2009-2012) made two appearances with the Asheville Tourists last week.  In his first outing, he took the Tourists out of trouble in the seventh when Augusta threatened to break the game open.  Four days later, he struck out four but gave up an earned run in two innings against Rome.

Mason’s season stats: 21 G, 3-1, 3.38 ERA, 29.1 IP, 27 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 10 BB, 28 K

Arik Sikula – Relief Pitcher – Lansing Lugnuts (Midwest League; Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays)

Sikula (2008-2011) converted save opportunities in all three outings last week.  Over a stretch of 3.1 innings, the right-hander allowed a hit and a walk while striking out six.  In his appearance on Saturday, he struck out the side against Bowling Green to collect his 15th save, ranking in a two-way tie for third in the Midwest League.

Sikula’s season stats: 37 G, 3-0, 1.96 ERA, 15 saves, 46.0 IP, 31 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 15 BB, 45 K

Ian Kadish – Relief Pitcher – Lansing Lugnuts (Midwest League; Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays)

Kadish (2008-2011) threw a perfect ninth inning in the Lugnuts 8-0 loss to Dayton on Thursday.  All three outs he recorded came via fly balls to left field as Kadish lowered his ERA eight points since his last action.

Kadish’s season stats: 35 G, 3-3, 3.67 ERA, 49.0 IP, 49 H, 25 R, 20 ER, 13 BB, 61 K

Kevin Shackelford – Relief Pitcher – Huntsville Stars (Southern League; Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers)

Shackelford (2008-2010) pitched two scoreless stints of 1.2 innings last week with the Stars.  In the latter of the two, he was the winning pitcher despite blowing a save opportunity in the sixth.

Shackelford’s season stats: 31 games, 2-3, 4.29 ERA, 4 saves, 42.0 IP, 46 H, 20 R, 20 ER, 5 BB, 33 K

Dan Straily – Starting Pitcher – Oakland Athletics

Straily (2008-2009) suffered his second straight loss with Oakland after a disastrous fifth inning against the Angels.  The A’s led 2-1, but Los Angeles punched across four runs in the fifth and ran away with an 8-3 victory.  Straily struck out five but gave up seven hits and two walks.  He’ll toe the rubber next when Mark Buehrle and the Blue Jays visit the Coliseum Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET.

Straily’s season stats with the A’s: 6-4 in 16 starts, 4.43 ERA, 91.1 IP, 79 H, 46 R, 45 ER, 28 BB, 75 K
Straily’s season stats with the River Cats: 3-1 in 5 starts, 1.14 ERA, 31.2 IP, 24 H, 11 R, 4 ER, 9 BB, 33 K

Thor Meeks – Catcher – Hagerstown Suns (South Atlantic League; Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals)

Meeks (2009-2012) is currently listed on the disabled list.

Greg Williams – Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Advanced California League; Class A affiliate of the Texas Rangers)

Williams (2009-2011) was with the Pelicans for the latter part of the 2012 season and will remain with the club while he undergoes a rehab stint during the 2013 season.  The right-hander, who was 2-0 with a 3.96 ERA in 2012, needed Tommy John surgery in October and will remain in the Rangers’ system at their Arizona complex until his recovery.
