HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Last week in professional baseball, four former Marshall pitchers took winning decisions, most notably Dan Straily, who became the first previous member of the Thundering Herd to win a game at the Major League level since 2003. 

Joe Church, Mike Mason, and Arik Sikula also grabbed wins in a successful week of baseball.    

This week’s performances can be found below:

Dan Straily – Starting Pitcher – Oakland Athletics
In his one start of the week, Straily became the first former Marshall pitcher since Rick Reed to take a winning decision at the Major League level.  September 7, 2003 was the previous date, claimed when Reed – a member of the Minnesota Twins – took a win in extra inning relief against the Texas Rangers.  In Straily’s victory, he pitched 6.1 innings of shutout ball and struck out two while walking two and giving up three hits. 

Straily’s Major League stats are:
1-0, 3.18 ERA, 17.0 IP, 3 appearances, 12 strikeouts

Straily’s Triple-A stats are:
5-2, 1.36 ERA, 53.0 IP, 8 appearances, 67 strikeouts

Straily’s cumulative minor league stats are:
8-6, 2.60 ERA, 138.1 IP, 22 appearances, 175 strikeouts

Joe Church – Relief Pitcher – Eugene Emeralds (Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres)
Church appeared in two games last week and took a winning decision Saturday after throwing an inning of relief against Salem-Keizer.  Church was brought into the game in the top of the seventh with his team trailing 2-0 only to see the Eugene bats give him three runs in the bottom half.  Church threw two innings of hitless ball in his other appearance of the week.  Church’s season stats are:
4-2,3.91 ERA, 25.1 IP, 23 appearances, 30 strikeouts

Mike Mason – Relief Pitcher – Grand Junction Rockies (Rookie Pioneer League – Colorado Rockies)
In three appearances on the bump, Mason also took a winning decision with the Grand Junction Rockies.  Mason struck out two and allowed only one hit in two innings in the Monday performance.  Mason’s season stats are:
2-0, 8.20 ERA, 18.2 IP, 14 appearances, 17 strikeouts

Jesse Fernandez – Relief Pitcher – Aberdeen IronBirds (Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles)
Fernandez got his first taste of long relief for the IronBirds, lasting three innings on the road against Lowell.  In two seasons with the Herd, Fernandez only once pitched three innings in a single game (May 7, 2010 against East Carolina).  The three innings last Tuesday saw Fernandez strike out five while allowing two runs on four hits.  Fernandez’s season stats are:
0-0, 4.66 ERA, 9.2 IP, 6 appearances, 10 strikeouts

Ian Kadish – Relief Pitcher – Lansing Lugnuts (Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays)
Kadish pitched in two games last week, throwing 2.1 innings and striking out three.    

Kadish’s Lansing stats are:
1-1, 0 saves, 4.32 ERA, 8.1 IP, 8 appearances, 11 strikeouts

Kadish’s cumulative minor league stats are:
2-2, 5 saves, 2.32 ERA, 31.0 IP, 23 appearances, 47 strikeouts

Arik Sikula – Relief Pitcher – Vancouver Canadians (Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays)
Sikula appeared in three games and added a winning decision and a save to his season marks.  On Tuesday, Sikula tossed 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit while picking up the win.  Sunday night, he earned his team-leading sixth save.  Sikula’s season stats are:
2-1, 6 saves, 2.84 ERA, 31.2 IP, 24 appearances, 24 strikeouts

Victor Gomez – Catcher – Florence Freedom (Frontier League)
Gomez went 0-for-1 in a pinch hit at-bat last week.  Gomez’s season stats are:
.225 BA, 0 HR, 5 RBIs, 3 BB, 0 SB

Rhett Stafford – Catcher – AZL Athletics (Rookie Arizona League – Oakland Athletics)
Did not play last week. 

Stafford’s AZL Athletics stats are:
.250 BA, 0 HR, 1 RBIs, 1 BB, 1 SB

Stafford’s cumulative season stats are:
.197 BA, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, 11 BB, 1 SB

Kevin Shackelford – Relief Pitcher – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Class A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers)
Shackelford threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief last week in his only appearance.  While allowing three hits, Shackelford struck out one and walked one.  Shackelford’s season stats are:
3-4, 4 saves, 4.47 ERA, 56.1 IP, 24 appearances, 34 strikeouts

Greg Williams – Relief Pitcher – Hickory Crawdads (Class A affiliate of the Texas Rangers)
Williams was assigned a single inning of work back with the Hickory Crawdads – ending a rehab assignment in the Rookie Arizone League.  Williams’ season stats are:
2-0, 4.40 ERA, 30.2 IP, 24 appearances, 27 strikeouts
