HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall baseball head coach Jeff Waggoner has announced the Thundering Herd’s 2017 schedule. The slate is highlighted by five teams that made NCAA Regional appearances a year ago, and midweek games against schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference and the Big 12 Conference.
“Marshall baseball will play one of the toughest schedules in program history,” coach Waggoner said. “Playing in Conference USA, our players get to compete against some of the best programs in the country. Prior to and during our conference schedule, we will face five teams that made it to the 2016 NCAA Tournament, including Georgia Tech, Western Carolina, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech and Florida Atlantic. We will also play 27 home games, along with a home-and-home series with instate rival West Virginia. This schedule allows our team to play on a national stage.”
The Thundering Herd begins the season on a seven-game road trip. Marshall will play Georgia State, Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State in Atlanta from Feb. 17-19. The Herd will then travel to Virginia Tech (Feb. 21) and Western Carolina (Feb. 24-26).
Marshall returns home to West Virginia to host 10 of 11 games through March 4-19. The Herd’s first home three-game series will be against Lehigh (March 4-5) at the Kennedy Center on Rt. 2 in Huntington. After a road midweek game against ETSU (March 8), the Herd returns home for a seven-straight games. Marshall will host Niagara (March 10-12) and Ohio (March 14) at the Kennedy Center, while welcoming C-USA opponent UTSA (March 17-19) to Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
Marshall will also welcome conference rivals Middle Tennessee (March 31 – April 2), FIU (April 21-23), WKU (May 5-7) and Charlotte (May 18-20) to the Mountain State. In non-conference action, the Herd hosts Eastern Kentucky (March 28), Virginia Tech (April 5), Morehead State (April 11) and West Virginia (April 18).
The Herd visits Southern Miss (March 24-26), UAB (April 7-9), Florida Atlantic (April 14-16), Old Dominion (April 28-30) and Louisiana Tech (May 12-14) in conference play. In non-conference, Marshall travels to Tennessee (March 22), West Virginia (April 4), Morehead State (April 26) and Ohio (May 9).
Following the regular season, the Conference USA Tournament will be held on May 24-28 at MGM Park in Biloxi, Miss.
Marshall returns 14 players from a year ago, which is coming off its best season in program history with 34 wins. The Herd welcomes back C-USA Newcomer of the Year Tommy Lane and all-freshman team selection Joshua Shapiro.
“A sense of urgency has been crucial for the fall and will continue into our winter workouts in preparing for the challenging schedule,” Waggoner said.
