Michael Brown recently completed his second season as the Director of Basketball Operations at Marshall University.
Brown came to Huntington from Dartmouth College where he spent the 2009-10 season as an assistant coach for the 2009-10 staff.
Prior to joining the Big Green staff, Brown served as an assistant coach for two years at Idaho State. In Brown's two years with the Bengals, he helped the team win 25 games while advancing to the Big Sky Tournament semifinals both seasons. Brown began his collegiate coaching career in the state of Maine at Bowdoin as an assistant during the 2006-07 campaign. He helped coach Tim Gilbride lead the Polar Bears to a 15-10 mark and a fourth consecutive winning season.
Brown was a two-time captain and four-year letterwinner with the Providence Friars, and was a big part of the 1994 squad that won the Big East championship. His 104 career starts rank fourth on the Friars' all-time charts, while his 1,163 points place him 21st. Brown also contributed 359 assists during his four years, 12th most in Providence history. As a senior, Brown was named the team's Jimmy Walker Most Valuable Player and the Marvin Barnes Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, he received the college's most prestigious athletic award, the Mal Brown Award, which is given to the Providence senior athlete who best personifies the ideals of sportsmanship, courage and honor. Brown, a native of central New York, graduated in 1996 with a degree in accountancy.
Brown played professionally in England from 1996-2004, most notably with the Brighton Bears of the British Basketball League for five years (1999-04). In his final season with the Bears, he helped them to a 30-6 record and the BBL championship. From 2004-06, Brown played for AGE Halkidas in Greece where he earned All-Bosman team honors.
"Mike played for me at Providence," said Marshall head coach Tom Herrion. "He had an outstanding career and was tremendous overachiever. After a long professional career in Europe he decided to get into coaching and after a few years as an assistant he is a welcome addition to our staff as our director of operations. I really am excited to have Mike on board, I believe he will be a great resource for me and more importantly for our players, he has accomplished many things in his playing career that our guys hope to attain. Mike is a high character individual and we are thrilled he is in the Herd family."
Mike resides in Huntington, W.Va.
