Tom Herrion, head coach
Opening statement
“To say that the victory was needed would be one of my biggest understatements in my three and a half years here. We needed the taste of victory in the worst way. I was very concerned coming in to this game about our mental state of being. I thought the heartbreak of how we lost the other night accumulated with this young and inexperienced team had taken a little bit of toll. I think we were very good yesterday and I thought it carried over to the first part of the first half, but to our kids’ credit they responded and did it in a big way out of half time. This was a must needed win and pivotal for us as we head into conference play. We talk about a fresh start and this group needs a fresh start. They deserve it and now it’s a 16-game season for us. That’s all we’re focused on with the road trip and the new scheduling. It will be UTSA on Thursday and UTEP on Saturday. All of our focus is on San Antonio and trying to take care of business on the road against that ball club. We need to handle our first game of conference play. In the second half the ball movement was outstanding. Our defense was really, really good today. The press was good at times. It wore them down.”

On taking care of the ball in the second half
“We talked about it going into the South Carolina game and we did a poor job. We talked about it going into Akron and I thought we did a poor job in the first half there. We have been a real ball-secure team in a long stretch and now it’s just reared its head at the wrong time. We’ve been careless with the ball and trying to make homeruns when they’re not there. I think it starts with Kareem Canty. He has to do a better job at taking care of the ball. He’s our leader, he’s our quarterback. I thought we did a good job at tightening things up.”

Ryan Taylor, redshirt freshman forward
On getting an overdue win
“It feels good. This is a big confidence booster going into conference play. We were just happy to get that monkey off our back and to do it at home in front of our own crowd. Coach wrote on the board that it is a 0-0 start, a fresh start for us.”

Kareem Canty, redshirt freshman guard
On ending the three-game losing streak
“It was very frustrating to me. Everyone knows that when we lose, I can’t sleep at night. We got a win, so I’ll sleep well tonight. It was important for us to win this one leading us into conference play.”

Shawn Smith, junior forward
On the victory giving the Herd a boost of confidence heading into conference play
“It will give us a lot of motivation and make us look forward to going to practice more. When we lost, we were confused about why we were losing. We didn’t have the energy in practice. Getting this win really helped us out and we will go into conference play with a lot of motivation.”
