BIRMINGHAM, Ala, - Tre Whitted (Wilmington, N.C.) scored a team-high 15 points, but it was not enough as the UAB Blazers knocked off the Thundering Herd, 82-61, Saturday evening at Bartow Arena.
With UAB's win and UTEP's loss to UCF, UAB wrapped up the No. 2 seed in next week's Conference USA tournament in Memphis.
With the loss, Marshall has garnered the #9 seed in the Conference USA Tournament presented by Aeropostale, which begins Wednesday at FedExForum in Memphis. The Herd will take on #8 seed Tulane, who defeated Marshall earlier this season in New Orleans, 61-36, at 7 p.m. EST.
Marhsall never led in the game, as UAB found the basket early and often. In the first half, the Blazers made 50.9% of its shots for the game, compared to only 32.8% for the Herd. The Blazers made the Herd work for every shot with their suffocating full-court defense, and Marshall could never find its rhythm in the game.
Senior center Mark Patton (Barboursville, W.Va.) was Marshall's other double-digit scorer. He scored 13 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven. Freshman Markel Humphrey (Ellenwood, Ga.) also grabbed seven rebounds for the Herd.
Blazer guard Marvett McDonald led all scorers with 17 points. Maurice Gibbs also added 10 points for UAB.
