HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Five players hit double-figures in scoring as the Marshall men’s basketball team defeated the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears in an exhibition, 99-81, Sunday at the Cam Henderson Center.
Junior guard C.J. Burks led the Herd with 23 points. Junior guard Jon Elmore had 18 and freshman Jarrod West had 16. Junior forward Ajdin Penava had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Redshirt freshman Jannson Williams added 12 points with two blocks. The Herd made 18 3-pointers, one shy of tying a team record.
The Herd opened the game down 6-4 at the first media timeout, but a 14-0 run sparked by 3-pointers by Elmore, Burks and West put the Herd up 12. As a team, the Herd hit eight 3-pointers in the half, with four coming during the 14-0 spurt. West Virginia Tech cut the Herd’s lead to eight points at 20-12, but Marshall’s lead never fell below ten points after that. The Herd ended the first half with a 47-24 lead.
West Virginia Tech tried to claw its way back into the game in the early stages of the second half, but 3-pointers by Penava and Burks increased the Herd’s lead back to 24 points, 55-31. Consecutive 3-pointers by Burks and West increased what was a 17-point Herd lead into a 23-point advantage, 69-46. Burks and Williams hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Herd a 91-63 advantage. West Virginia Tech made a late run, but the Herd closed out a 99-81 win.
The Herd closes its exhibition slate Nov. 5 when it takes on West Virginia Wesleyan at the Cam Henderson Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
