On the game:
It's good to get it out of the way. We obviously weren't very good. And yet you still win comfortably so it gives us a great opportunity to teach from this starting tomorrow. There were some good things, but defensively, I thought we were a step slow. They hit those threes early; they had thirteen points, and banked one in. Their first 13 points - four of them were threes, then we did a good job of guarding the three, but in the second half, we just fouled. We didn't move our feet. I thought their small, quick people and we were just chasing guys around too much. It bothered us.
Offensively, decent things, played too fast at times, and our shot selection was poor. I don't know if I've ever seen a team outrebound a team by 45, so effort, effort, no problem with the effort. No one can blame their effort. 69-25 is just a staggering number and so I'm pleased in that regard, but obviously we've got to get a lot better. And we will. It's a good group, and we'll get back after it tomorrow. We'll have a busy weekend getting ready with a quick turn-around and a closed scrimmage Saturday. Not very good right now, but I know we're going to get a lot better.
On tournament-style of basketball with quick turnarounds:
It's actually a good thing from a teaching standpoint and a coaching standpoint. It will simulate a little bit how we're going to play next weekend. We open with Longwood on Friday and go to Villanova on Sunday so in that regard it will be a little bit similar. We have to maximize our educational learning capacity tomorrow. It might not be as much physical as it is film and mental and correct a lot of things because there's a lot of things that have to be corrected on both ends of the floor.
On the defense:
I wouldn't say it's totally disappointing. I think when you hold a team to 33% from the floor and 23% from the three-point line and you outrebound them, there's some good things there. As I said earlier, they had 13 points in the first four or five minutes of the game - four threes and the kid banked one in - then they hit two three-point shots the rest of the game so we adjusted there. In the second half, the one thing that disappointed me greatly was the fact that we fouled too much. We didn't play sound defensively, one-on-one. Nonetheless, I wouldn't say I'm disappointed. I just know there's a lot of things that we have to get a lot better.
On 15 turnovers:
Disappointed. We were at a really good number until about the last four minutes of the first half. I think we were at four and then we had a couple of back-tips in transition, and we were a little sloppy with it. Some of that token pressure bothered us. Playing early games, you see some things that you haven't spent enough time on, and that's my fault, but we'll get better at it. We had a lot of different guys playing a lot of different minutes. Some of our units were scrambled. Nonetheless, too many. There's no doubt about it. 15 is not a good number for us. We obviously have to do a better job at the foul line.
