Herd Offense Out-Guns West Virginia Wesleyan in Final Exhibition
The Herd defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 95-76
HUNTINGTON W.Va. - Marshall men's basketball closed its exhibition play with a victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday night, 95-76 in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd had double-digit point production from junior guard Jon Elmore with 11 points, junior forward Ajdin Penava with 14 points, sophomore forward Phil Bledsoe with 14 points and junior guard CJ Burks with a game-high 18 points. Marshall shot just 9-37 from behind the arc, but managed to score 32 points off turnovers compared to Wesleyan's five.
Marshall trailed at the first media timeout 10-9, then the Thundering Herd got the offense going just before the midway point of the first half after going on a 9-0 run to take a 25-20 lead. The Herd held a six-point lead at the half, 43-37. Freshman forward Darius George and sophomore forward Christian Thieneman added seven points each. Junior forward Dani Koljanin led the Herd at the half with eight points and five rebounds.
West Virginia Wesleyan quickly sparked a 6-0 run to the start the second half. Burks answered with back-to-back buckets to restore the Herd's six-point lead, 56-49. Burks added 10 second half points from going 4-of-6 from the field before the 12-minute mark of the second half. Marshall went on a 10-0 run midway through the half to gain their biggest lead of the contest, 78-62. At the final media timeout of the contest, the Herd led 82-66. Marshall won the contest 95-76.
The Herd opens season play this Friday against the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks in the Cam Henderson Center. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
