JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - East Tennessee State used a 20-point effort from Courtney Pigram in route to a 91-63 win over Marshall Monday night at Memorial Center.
Joe Miles (Forestville, Md.) led the MU effort with 15 points off of the bench. Miles was the only Marshall player to score in double-figures.
ETSU never trailed in the game, and the Herd fell behind early after failing to convert on several open three-point attempts in the first five minutes. The Bucs quickly seized the opportunity to put Marshall away for good. MU cut the ETSU lead to 13-9 on a made three by Miles at the 14:16 mark in the first half, but the Buccaneers then reeled off 12 consecutive points to give them a cushion they would never relinquish the rest of the way.
The Bucs shot 58.3% for the game, including 64.3% from beyond-the-arc. Meanwhile, the Herd was limited to 37.1% from the floor, and only 24.3% from three. ETSU also out-rebounded Marshall, 41-32, on the night.
"I give them credit," said Marshall head coach Ron Jirsa. "They needed a win, and they got it.
"We didn't shoot the ball very well, and they had a good shooting night. We didn't play hard, we didn't shoot well, and they did.
The Bucs had four other double-figure scorers besides Pegram - Tim Smith had 19 points, Brad Nuckles scored 16, Dillion Sneed added 15, and Ben Rhoda chipped in 10.
The Herd returns home to take on Maryland-Eastern Shore Thursday night in the Henderson Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
