HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -
Marshall opens its seventh Conference USA season on Wednesday by hosting UTEP at 8 p.m. ET.
The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan (play-by-play) and Pete Gillen (analyst) calling the action. Due to the national broadcast, the game will not be streamed on HerdZone.com's All-Access platform because of Conference USA's television agreement with the network.
Marshall (9-4) and UTEP (7-7) meet for the first time since the 2011 Conference USA Tournament, a game the Miners won 77-65. That game was also the last time the Thundering Herd has been outrebounded. Marshall has gone 14 consecutive games with either a rebounding advantage or equal rebounds over its opponents. UTEP leads the all-time series 7-1, with all seven wins coming while being members of C-USA.
The Thundering Herd is coming off consecutive losses after posting four-straight wins. Its latest outing was a 67-51 loss to Akron on Sunday.
Sophomore guard DeAndre Kane leads the Herd in scoring with 16.7 points per game, the third best mark in C-USA. Junior forward Dennis Tinnon ranks third in the conference and 18th in the NCAA with 10.4 rebounds per game.
Senior guard Damier Pitts has scored in double-figures in all but one game this season. He is averaging 14.5 points per game and ranks second in C-USA with 4.9 assists per game.
UTEP is coming off a 79-58 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec. 29. The Miners are 0-3 on the road, but had wins over Clemson and Auburn in late December at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. Gabriel McCulley is the team's lone senior, with sophomores John Bohannon and Michael Perez also returning from last season's team. Perez leads the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game.
